Abstract

In this article the writer discusses the development of an individual's capacity to think which is one of the goals of education that has been neglected in schools. She argues that from the Islamic perspective, thinking in school is broader that what has been understood in the West which focuses on creative and critical thinking for the purpose of problem solving and decision making. To strengthen her argument, the writer gives a brief historical accounts of the critical thinking movement. She further explains why from the Islamic perspective, thinking should strive to achieve hikmah (widsom) and to arrive at that, thinking should focus on its critical, creative and adabiyy (ethical) aspects. Finally, the writer urges schools to introduce philosophy to students especially at the secondary level.
