Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the approaches used by teachers in the implementation of literature lesson in the ESL classroom and the reasons for adopting these approaches. It also aims to determine the factors which influence the teachers choice on the approaches to be used at the different stages in the lesson. For the purpose of this study, nine English language teachers from a suburban school in Johor Bahru were selected as respondents. The instruments used were questionnaire and interviews. The data was analysed using the Frequency Count and the results were displayed in the form of tables and charts. The findings revealed that teachers use three approaches which are the language-based approach, content-based approach and personal enrichment in the implementation of literature lesson in the ESL classroom. The three approaches are used at every stage of the literature lesson with the content-based approach being the most used and the least used approach is the personal enrichment.
